Shihan Lewis is one of the most respected martial arts instructors in the United States. He is presently a six degree black belt and is a certified Shihan (Master Instructor degree in Japanese Martial Arts) with Traditional Karate-do Organization. Shihan Ivan Lewis teaches one of the major Karate styles called Shito-ryu.
Shihan Lewis began his martial arts training in the US Virgin Islands. His instructors includes Hanshi Del Saito (current instructor), Grand master Frank Ruiz, Sensei Toyotaro Miyazaki and Shihan Wilfredo Roldan.
In 1989, Ivan Lewis was included into the NGR Black Belt Hall of Fame and in 1998, he was inducted into the Texas Martial Arts Hall of Fame. He was also presented the instructor of the year in 1989.
In 2000, the Traditional Karate League honored Shihan Lewis with School of the Year and Instructor of the Year awards.
Shihan Lewis also serves on the AAU Hall of Fame committee and holds a "R" Referee's license.
